The idea
The internet is full of things that disappear. Posts are buried, accounts are abandoned, platforms change and yesterday becomes almost impossible to find. Million Moments is trying to do something slightly different. The idea is deliberately simple: one million people, one million moments and one shared wall. A sentence, a thought, a memory, a joke, a confession, a tiny piece of an ordinary Tuesday. Nothing has to be historically important to deserve a place in history.
One million small things
Million Moments is an independent participatory art project. The wall is built one contribution at a time until, eventually, it reaches exactly one million moments. Every moment receives the same amount of space. There is no VIP corner, no premium square and no algorithm deciding that one person's sentence deserves to shout louder than another person's sentence. Someone may write about the birth of a child. Someone else may write that they finally learned how to make decent pasta. Both existed. Both happened. Both can take their place.
The wall
The digital wall is intended to become a collective snapshot of a particular period of human life. It will grow slowly, moment by moment, number by number, until there is nowhere left to write. Once moment number one million is reached, the idea is that the wall closes. No number one million and one. No extension pack. No second floor quietly added because somebody decided a million was not enough. One million means one million.
From pixels to something heavier
The project is not intended to end at the edge of a browser window. When the wall is complete, the collected moments are intended to become part of a physical archive: the Book of Memories. That archive is intended to be sealed inside a metal time capsule and hidden somewhere in the Swiss Alps. The exact location is intended to remain undisclosed, with its coordinates encrypted and left for the future. The process of creating the archive and eventually placing the capsule will be documented. After that, time gets a turn.
Permanence, approximately
We like the word permanent. The internet likes the word permanent too, although history has demonstrated that the internet sometimes has a surprisingly flexible understanding of it. Million Moments therefore does not promise technological immortality. Servers exist. Hardware fails. Technology changes. Laws change. Mountains probably have the better long-term survival record. What the project can promise is its intention: to maintain the digital collection and, once complete, turn it into a physical record designed to survive beyond the website itself.
Words have consequences
A public wall does not mean absolutely anything can be placed on it. Submitted moments remain subject to the project rules, applicable law, technical limitations and the rights of other people. Content may therefore be rejected, restricted, corrected or removed where reasonably necessary for legal, safety, security or rights-related reasons. Permanence is an intention, not a licence to harm somebody.
The machinery behind the poetry
Building a digital monument still requires remarkably ordinary things: servers, databases, payment infrastructure and code. Third-party services may be used where necessary to operate the project. Details about payments, participation, submitted content and use of the website are provided in the Terms. Information about the processing of personal data and browser technologies is provided in the Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy.
Operator
One person, one brain, probably a million thoughts — and somewhere among them, Million Moments appeared. What started as a simple idea slowly became something much bigger: an attempt to collect one million tiny pieces of human life and preserve them together. The project is independently created and operated by JD Design, 8810 Horgen, Switzerland, and built one piece at a time with a slightly unreasonable ambition to eventually collect exactly one million memories, thoughts, jokes, confessions and ordinary moments that might otherwise simply disappear. Questions, thoughts or anything else can find their way to hello@millionmoments.art.
Intellectual property
The Million Moments name, website, visual identity, original texts, graphics and other original project material may be protected by applicable intellectual property laws. Rights and permissions relating to moments submitted by participants are governed by the Terms.
External services and links
The website may contain links to or integrations with third-party services. Those services operate according to their own terms, policies and technical systems.
Privacy
Million Moments is interested in collecting moments, not constructing unnecessarily detailed portraits of the people who leave them. Information necessary to operate the project may still need to be processed. How that happens, what may be collected and the rights available to visitors are described more properly in the Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy.
Things change
Million Moments may evolve while the wall is being built. Technology changes, practical realities appear and legal requirements change. Project information and legal documents may therefore be updated where reasonably necessary. The fundamental idea, however, remains remarkably uncomplicated: one million moments, collected one at a time.
The legal sentence
Applicable mandatory law remains applicable regardless of how poetic an Imprint becomes.
That's it.
You survived the Imprint. Somewhere else on this website, a wall is waiting for one million moments.
